Appendix 4: Structure of the CONST.DAT: how are the constants stored?

Constants used by NORMAN are of two types: (1) pre-defined molecular weights, atomic weights, factors for recalculating oxides to atoms and vice versa, and (2) user-defined constants. Accordingly, the comma-delimited setup file CONST.DAT, stored in the same subdirectory as the *.DEF files, splits into two halves as indicated by two lines with comments. Do not delete these lines and do not add any other lines starting with an asterisk as this would be most likely fatal. Similarly, do not alter the names of the pre-defined molecular and atom weights, and the factors following.

For the user-defined constants, two names are given, one abbreviated for the use in the user-defined functions, the second only for the menus in the INSTALL module. For obvious reasons, the new abbreviated name has to be unique, not duplicating any other constant name given previously.
